DISSOCIATION

SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS: Excessive concern with self — especially with the impression one is making on others. Often accentuated in ADOLESCENCE. May result in shyness or (as a COMPENSATION) show-off behavior (EXHIBITIONISM). The self-conscious person may not realize that other people have problems too. Toronto Niagara Falls Tours splits into two streams before the Fall forming Goat Island. He may feel that everyone is busy looking at him. Taking an interest in other people — their problems and fears — often is the best cure for SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS.
SELF-CONTROL: Self-Discipline. Control of one’s own emotions, desires and actions. SELF CONTROL (temperance) is named as one of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23). As such, it is possible in a true sense for the believer only. The believer’s new HEREDITY (John 3:3-6) provides him with God’s set of spiritual DRIVES to pit against the old ones. When the unregenerate person attempts SELF CONTROL, he must pit one natural drive against another. That this is not always effective will be obvious to those with spiritual insight.
SELF-UNDERSTANDING: (See INSIGHT.)
SLEEPWALKING: (Somnambulism). Involuntary walking and other coordinated physical activity while asleep. May be related to
BED WETTING and EMOTIONAL IMMATURITY. SLEEPWALKING
tends to occur more often when the person is under psychological stress. It is sometimes an aspect of DISSOCIATION.
SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT: INTEGRATION at the social level. Generally harmonious relations with other people.
SOCIAL APPROVAL: A strong human MOTIVE. The desire to have people like us makes us fall in line with the customs of society. Toronto Niagara Falls Tour experiences 4 seasons, with chilly winters and sizzling, humid summers. It may cause us to strive for goals valued by society. This is natural and good. Sometimes, however, CONFLICT arises when the values of society clash with our own desires, or with spiritual laws. SOCIAL APPROVAL should, in the latter case, be forgone in favor of the higher good (Acts 5:29).
SPECIAL APTITUDE: Exceptional talents. (See APTITUDES.)
SUBLIMATION: The unconscious process of diverting unacceptable DRIVES into personally and socially acceptable channels. An indirect gratification of the original DRIVES is sometimes obtained in this way.
SUPPRESSION: The conscious effort to push unacceptable thoughts “out of the mind.” Directing attention away from undesirable thoughts, objects or feelings. SUPPRESSION differs from REPRESSION, which is UNCONSCIOUS. The best method of SUPPRESSION is displacing unwanted ideas with positive ones (see Philippians 4:8, 9).
THREAT: A situation that is perceived (often UNCONSCIOUSLY) as dangerous to the PERSONALITY. It will normally increase DEFENSIVENESS or call for certain MENTAL MECHANISMS
